Total can count: 588. And counting. My car has now become a recycling center and is filled with bottles, plastic bags and latex gloves. I’ve begun collecting cans everywhere I go, and as a result, I’ve gotten use to the glaring and staring that occurs every time I stop and walk into bushes or pick through a garbage can to see if I can find a few cents. As you read this weekend update, you’ll find that I’ve collected quite a bit this weekend and can’t wait to cash in!
Let’s see, quick overview. Work is crazy busy- students have moved in swarmed our office. Living on second street and seeing the new class move into the freshman dorm has brought back so many memories, enough to make me tear up as I think back (but that’s a later post). Joe came to visit me and instead of cozying in to see Avatar for the first time, I went out on a Thursday evening to collect cans (it was recycling night). This made it easier to find cans because I simply looked in the blue bins near the road but I found out that people are very territorial with their streets. One old woman yelled across the street to me, calling me a slut? It took me a few minutes to realize she was hollering at me because I was collecting on her street, so once I heard the comment, my reaction was to yell back sinner? I don’t know why I had that reaction, but she kept quiet and left me alone. Totally random. I returned to a good couple games of chutes and ladders, of course winning each round.
Friday I helped Laura move into her new apartment with Pat. Great form of exercise and Saturday morning my arms were sore. Can’t wait to go visit now that it’s all set up; we are going to start a dinner night so that I can teach her some of my favorite recipes. What better than some quality time with a good friend with good healthy food. First on the list to teach her- kale chips!
Speaking of kale, I got four bunches of it at the Farmer’s Market Saturday morning, along with some beets, apples, a fresh baguette, and a handful of zinnias. oh, and twenty cents of cans along the walk to the riverside. I had a tasty little brunch- baguette with fresh strawberry preserves and placed mini bouquets around the apartment. All out of reach from Roscoe.
These are now in my shower- love waking up in the morning to these colors.
I drove up to camp to visit with my mom and Bill- traffic was crazy heading north because of the weather and Traver’s weekend at the racetrack. They took Daniel along with them this time because he loves camping but never gets to go with his family. There was swimming in the river, fishing/fishing contest, an ice cream social and of course, can collecting. There were two garbage cans filled with returnables down by the beach, so I snagged ’em. I made myself a great foil dinner before I left for home- and put it in the oven. One of my favorite and easiest meals! Mine had fresh venison (my dad’s catch last year), mushrooms, peppers, onions, carrots and potatoes all from the garden! Little EVOO and seasoning- delicious!
P.s… Daniel came in second place in the fishing contest. His sunfish weighed in at a whopping .07 pounds! He was pretty satisfied- and returned the fish to the river because he didn’t want to harm/kill him for dinner.
Oh! Before returning home I randomly met up with Marla and took a stroll downtown Saratoga. She took Winky and I grabbed a plastic bag. I collected a whole market bags worth in just about an hour. We caught up and I got her out of the house. I miss that lady like crazy- I used to see her at least once a week to run. It’s like my own therapy session walking/running with her. Hopefully in the near future we can work something out to see each other more often and actually run/train for a marathon.
Saturday night was much needed. I headed back up to Saratoga to head out with Cate and the gang. I haven’t been out in months it feels like, which was great because at this point I’m a lightweight. Side note: Saturday’s weigh-in: down another pound! Today prompted a eat-whatever Joe wants day because I was slightly hungover/craving random food. He made his salsa and cheese dip, I was satisfied eating this over McDonald’s to calm my stomach from last night. I feel like I’m getting too old to drink like that these days; I think I’ll stick to my occasional glass of red wine.
Once again, it’s Sunday and I know it’s going to be another late one (seeing as I slept from 2-6pm this afternoon). I have some cleaning and a ton of cooking ahead of me- classes start this week so I’ll have to bring not only lunch, but dinner three days out of the week. Gah. I’ll post the photographs and recipes later this week. Enjoy your last few hours of the weekend, I know I will.
